You are never too old to get a pimple. Although acne is usually associated with teens, acne is a skin condition that can occur in anyone at any age, particularly women who are pregnant or going through menopause. If you are sick of waking up with new blemishes, take the steps to control your acne problem at home. If at-home care has no effect, a dermatologist can help find the medication that is right for your particular case of acne.
Step 1
Wash your face twice a day, using an OTC face wash that contains an effective ingredient to fight acne. Effective active ingredients include benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid, says the Mayo Clinic.
Step 2
Apply an OTC spot treatment, containing the same active ingredient as your face wash, to problem areas at night. If you are using a face wash that contains salicylic acid, use a salicylic acid spot treatment.
Step 3
Leave those problem areas alone. Although you may have the urge to pop or squeeze a blemish, leaving it alone can help prevent scarring and help the pimple heal more quickly on its own.
Step 4
Use a glycolic acid peel regularly to remove dead skin cells, recommends dermatologist, Virgil Hatcher, M.D., in “Marie Claire” magazine. Oil can become trapped under dead skin cells; letting the dead cells build up can cause more breakouts.
Step 5
Consult a doctor for prescription treatment if your acne does not respond to OTC remedies, recommends the Mayo Clinic. Your doctor may recommend a prescription topical medication, like a retinoid, an oral antibiotic or an oral acne medication, like isotretinoin, to reduce acne.
